Florida School Zone Traffic Camera Dished 1,300 Tickets in 5 Weeks

NEW SCHOOL ZONE TRAFFIC CAMERA ISSUES MORE THAN 1,300 TICKETS IN ONLY 5 WEEKS

Last fall, I was driving to meet a friend one evening and drove by a school down a city block.  Days later, I was shocked when I got a speeding ticket in the mail, going 7 mph over the speed limit to beat a light.  And that’s how I learned that most if not all schools have a traffic camera set up nearby.  It doesn’t matter if school is in, or even if it’s midnight on a weekend.  You’re getting a ticket, priced to speeding in a school zone.  And so I’m not surprised at all to learn about a Florida school zone traffic camera that dished out 1,300 tickets in only 5 short weeks.

POLICE CHIEF INSTALLED TRAFFIC CAMERA TO PROTECT KIDS FROM CHRONIC SPEEDING CARS

When I got my ticket, and realized the rules, I thought that there is a great public safety moral money maker.  I just didn’t hazard even a remotely accurate guess as to just how great a money maker.  The school in question is an elementary school in Eustis, Florida.  The police chief there, Craig Capri, was alarmed at all the cars going way too fast on the street outside the school, creating a real hazard for children’s safety.  So he took the idea of installing a traffic camera all the way to realization.  But these cameras at least, unlike the evil robot that tagged me, first warn drivers they are going too fast.

TRAFFIC CAMERA ISSUED ALL THOSE TICKETS TO DRIVERS AFTER THEY WERE ALREADY WARNED!

But after a warning was sent to drivers, the log then started generating and then sending speeding tickets.  And in just 5 weeks, the system sent out more than 1,300 of them.  No one, including the Eustis Police Chief, though there would ever possibly be so many.  As he said, “ Evidently, the warning didn’t do the job.”  There’s no word yet on the dollar value of all those speeding tickets.  But all the revenue will go to improving public safety in the town.  And yes, that will totally include even more traffic cameras installed in other school zones.

So take note, wherever you are.  If you see a school zone sign, slow the hell down, no matter the day or time.
