NEW SENSORY FRIENDLY GUM COULD SOON DELIVERY MEDICATIONS EASILY TO ANYONE
As the parent of an ASD child, I’m all too familiar with the trials and travails of navigating a host of simple things that become extremely complicated. And recently, one of those simple things that is no longer such is medications. Namely, my child one day suddenly decided that their remarkable skill at swallowing pills was no longer a good thing. In fact, they decided not to take medications in any form, whatsoever, just as it became vital that they do. But soon, there could be a sensory friendly fix, in the form of chewing gum (maybe bubble, too?) that can deliver meds easily.

RESEARCHERS HAVE ALREADY MADE GUM TO FIGHT THE FLU AND HERPES SIMPLEX VIRUSES
Yes, there are already some medications that come in the form of epidermal patches. You know, like nicotine patches? But the vast majority of medications still aren’t deliverable from patches. Believe me, in the last two months I’ve learned this the challenging way. But gum? That could actually help my child, right now. The development is coming from researchers at the University of Pennsylvania. So far, the successes are narrow, but extremely impressive. So far, they have in theory created gum that can trap the flu virus as well as the herpes-simplex viruses; both of them.

ALL TOO SOON, ALMOST ANY MEDICATION OR VACCINE COULD BE AS EASY AS A PIECE OF GUM
This means there’s the very real possibility that in the next few tomorrows, chewing a piece of gum could be all you have to do to take medications, as well as vaccines. And I’m sure anti-vaxxers won’t be pleased to hear this. But for me, as an ASD parent, I’m kind of thrilled, with the caveat that by the time this medications delivering gum is available, my child won’t need it anymore. But as one a member of 20% of the population who has trouble swallowing pills, I’ll be happy to take my Advil in gum form, whenever it arrives.
