SWISS HOMOPHOBE EMBARRASSES ZURICH
Is it the era of Trump? Or just the era of stupidity? Over here in the States we tend to think of Europeans as more reasonable. At the least, we don’t think of them as being just as bigoted and stupid in public as many Americans can be. But Zurich, Switzerland has a city council member named Daniel Regli who makes it all seem the same after he spoke last week. The Swiss politician blamed incontinence, from weakened anal muscles, for a recent increase in suicides among the gay population. Get that? Gay suicides are because of weak anuses from too much gay sex, according to this idiot.

You see, the council was having a debate on funding for sex education. That’s where Regli made his exclusively enlightened remarks. But how did he get to his stupid comments, you ask? Regli was criticizing a sex-ed website called Lust and Frust (Pleasure and Pain). The site is supported by the city’s education department. Regli thinks that the site promotes both homosexuality and promiscuity. That seems ok so far. But that’s when Regli went off the rails and shat the bed. He also criticized Lust and Frust for not letting people know that “homosexuals with multiple partners take their lives between the ages of 30 and 40…because their anal muscle is not holding up as it should.”

But if your vision of a more socially reasoned Europe is tarnished, don’t be too alarmed. The good news is that the city council’s reaction was to laugh in his face. There was some chaos as well. But that only lasted until Zurich’s mayor Corine Mauch, a very public lesbian, called for order. So even Regli’s own party was critical of his foolishness. Marco Denoth, the Swiss People’s Party (SVP) co-president, offered harsh words. “I do not want to see him anymore.”

But others, such as the Young Socialists Party, are calling for Regli’s resignation over the gay suicides comments. They believe if Swiss hate crime law included anti-gay statements that he would be in major trouble. “Someone who is able, in a homophobic tirade, to make the link between the anal muscle of homosexuals and suicide is beyond any conception that I can have of a politician,” said René Schegg. Shegg is no less than the director of the LGBTQ organization Pink Cross.

Regli, unsurprisingly, is defiant. “I said Saturday what nobody wants to hear.” But Schegg made it clear that it’s discrimination like Regli’s that is the real culprit. “They are still not sufficiently accepted in society.”
