Teacher Dead From Rabies After Bat Bite in California Classroom

TRAGIC NEWS WITH THE DEATH OF A CALIFORNIA TEACHER FROM BAT BITE, RABIES

Chiroptophobia, if you didn’t know, is the technical term for bat phobia.  And a lot of people are scared of bats, including Batman.  I consider them to be a little icky up close, but fascinating in the late dusk sky as they dart around eating insects.  But bats don’t often really hurt people, besides occasionally scaring them to death when they fly out of the fireplace and into someone’s hair.  Yet bats are a common carrier for rabies, which can be problematic.  And we have a tragic reminder of this after the tragic death of a California teacher from a bat bite in her classroom.

TEACHER FELT FINE FOR A MONTH, BUT THEN FULL RABIES INFECTION HIT TO FATAL EFFECT

The teacher was Leah Seneng, a 60-year-old who was leading a Bryant Middle School class in Central California she found what seemed to be a dead bat two months ago.  So she picked it up to throw it outside when it surprised her with a bite.  And the next day and for several days after Seneng seemed fine, and didn’t think much of the bat bite.  But rabies symptoms can take as long as 1-52 weeks to appear.  And in the tragic case of this California teacher, the full impact of actual rabies hit her a month later.

TEACHER PASSED AWAY FROM RABIES JUST 4 DAYS AFTER BEING ADMITTED TO HOSPITAL

By the time Seneng knew anything was wrong, it was apparently already too late.  Just a week and a half ago, she said she wasn’t feeling well so her daughter took her to the hospital.  But the same day she checked in, doctors put her into an induced coma, and she passed away after 4 days.  So if you weren’t already afraid of bats, this news could inspire fear.  But it’s important to note that it wasn’t the bat bite that killed this teacher, but rabies.  And we all have to remember that once rabies infects your central nervous system and clinical symptoms manifest, it is fatal 100% of the time.

So if any wild animal bites or scratches you, immediately seek out treatment for rabies.  And if you do, you won’t become a tragedy like this poor woman in California.
