Is That An Oreo On The Ground, Or a Trapdoor Ravine Spider?

THAT OREO LYING ON THE GROUND MAY REALLY BE THE REAR END OF A TRAPDOOR RAVINE SPIDER

Almost everyone in the United States loves, or at one time loved, eating Oreos.  As in, the cookies that have caused a wide spectrum of philosophies as to how to properly eat them.  Inside out?  Split and lick?  Edge to center?  Everyone has an opinion, if it only occupies a memory niche from childhood.  But speaking of childhood, how scary is it to see the picture above, and see how easy it would be for a child to mistake an Oreo on the ground, only to pick it up and find they’re holding a large, Trapdoor Ravine spider instead?

TRAPDOOR RAVINE SPIDERS ARE FOUND ALL OVER THE AMERICAN SOUTHEAST, ESPECIALLY GEORGIA

Seriously, take a look at that picture again and shudder at the thought.  Because at a glance, that spider butt totally, absolutely looks like an Oreo cookie.  So what is this spider, and where are they to be found?  If you live somewhere in the southeastern U.S., you probably already know that’s where to find them.  But for the uninitiated, these spiders literally burrow a hole in the ground that looks like rodent architecture.  The holes are made of dirt, leaves, and/or other loose ground material.  But if you think you see an Oreo sitting at your feet, it’s probably actually the rear end of a trapdoor ravine spider, with the rest of said creature down the hole.

TRAPDOOR RAVINE SPIDERS DON’T LIKE BEING NEAR HUMANS, BUT DON’T PICK ONE UP BY MISTAKE!

These spiders don’t tend to be very aggressive, and are mostly shy and stay out of sight.  While they’re all over the southeast, they are more concentrated in the state of Georgia.  Trapdoor ravine spiders have pretty large fangs they use to grab prey with.  And yes, they are totally ambush predators that don’t spin webs, and use their holes as a location to spring out, grab the unwary, and grab them into privacy for dinner.  But speaking again of the unwary, don’t be the sorry soul who thought they found an Oreo cookie prize on the ground but instead found a life altering heart attack.
