VANCE ISN’T CRAZY, BUT EXPECTING US TO BELIEVE HIS SOCIAL SECURITY FRAUD CLAIMS IS
Social Security has long been considered to be the Third Rail of American Politics, which essentially means it’s political suicide to touch it. And by touching it, you can assume that means defunding it, privatizing it, or even “streamlining” it. And it goes double or even triple for “reforming” or “cleaning it up.” Social Security works just fine, and that’s been a problem for greedy opportunists ever since it began under Roosevelt back in 1935. But the Trump Administration can’t seem to help itself, and Vice President Vance has now gone aaaaaaall the way in on a truly insane Social Security fraud claim.

And it’s a doozy of a claim, indeed. Vance really, really wants people to believe his claims, which are that a whopping 40% of all phone calls to Social Security are fraudulent. But sure, fraud does happen in all sectors of life, including government programs like Social Security. But 40% is so patently mendacious it’s staggering. Because while there are fraud calls to Social Security, they total about 0.0025% of all calls. And that translates as a grand total of 2.5 fraud calls out of every one thousand. Or even better, the reality is about 1/16,000th of what Vance is claiming.

Vance is clearly representing the interests of people who aren’t retired seniors who depend on Social Security checks every month. But even for Vance, and even in context to Donald Trump, the scale of this lie raises the bar on credulity beyond comprehension. I mean, really. We have to engage this level of dishonesty with the people running our government, as they troll our sensibilities like this? And even worse, I’m not sure they think they can “reform” Social Security anytime soon, as there are a lot of older Republicans in Red States who need their Social Security benefits.
But kids hearing these histrionic falsehoods might find them credible when they start voting in 10 years.
