US Vet With Disability On Vacation in Dubai Could Get Jailed for Pain Meds

DISABLED US VET ON VACATION IN DUBAI ARRESTED AND JAILED FOR HIS PAIN MEDS

One of the biggest problems with the changing landscape of drug laws in the West is that these laws aren’t universal in the least in other regions.  To be honest, some countries have incredibly conflicting laws right at home.  But for travelers making an honest mistake, the consequences can be dire.  Britney Griner comes to mind, though her incarceration was pure international politics, at the least.  But yet another American, this time a Navy vet with a disability, is in hot legal water, this time in Dubai.  And it’s still not clear what will happen to him for going on vacation there and taking his pain meds.

DUBAI HAS AN UGLY HISTORY OF JAILING FOREIGNERS FOR LUDICROUS DRUG CHARGES

Dubai has a sordid and lamentable history of this.  One English gentleman got 4 years in prison due to a microscopic bit of cannabis stuck to one of shoes.  In that same year, 2008, a man from Switzerland also got 4 years up the Dubai river because of poppy seeds, a grand total of three of them, were stuck to his clothes.  All he did was eat a bun at Heathrow before boarding his flight.  So with that context, it’s really not clear what will happen to Charles Wimberly, the US Navy vet with a disability who took his pain meds with him.  And by pain meds, we’re just talking about Ibuprofen and CBD oil.

DUBAI AUTHORITIES EVEN TOOK AWAY US VET’S DIABETES MEDICATION, AND HIS HEALTH IS AT RISK

The disabled vet went to Dubai for one last vacation before he had what will be (or would have been) debilitating surgery for his degenerative spine disease.  And yes, the pain meds were to manage the pain related to that… But authorities in Dubai took away his pain meds, not to mention his meds for diabetes and sleep apnea.  And then he suffered a diabetic attack.  If the authorities don’t release him, and soon, this US vet will miss his surgery.  And as they aren’t giving him any medical treatment, his health situation could quickly become dire.

Stay tuned, as major media will need to make this a bigger story to get the American government to apply diplomatic pressure to save this man’s life.
