MY TASTE BUDS WERE RIGHT! WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION FINDS THAT ASPARTAME IS A CARCINOGEN
I hate Diet Coke, with a passion. And I know, I know; some folks out there can’t get enough of it. But I happen to be able to remember the flavor and taste of the original Coke, so I’m biased. So much so, that I remember resenting the term, “Classic Coke,” too! But Diet Coke? Disgusting. Unacceptable. I always felt like I was drinking some kind of nebulous poison, notwithstanding any rum, vodka, bourbon or whiskey. But as it turns out, my taste buds were right on the money. Poison, indeed! Because now, we know that the World Health Organization and its researchers have found that aspartame IS a carcinogen!

ASPARTAME IS ONE OF THE MOST COMMONLY USED ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS IN THE WORLD
So why am I spending all this time talking about Diet Coke? Because aspartame is the artificial sweetener used in Diet Coke, that’s why! But to be fair, you can find this cancer-causing artificial sweetener in all sorts of diet drinks and snacks. It’s actually one of the world’s most commonly used artificial sweeteners! So yes, there is cause for concern for people who love diet drinks and snacks. Especially Diet Coke lovers. Because everyone I know who eats or drinks these things, they tend to do so every damn day. That means aspartame every damn day….

SO HOW MUCH ASPARTAME IS ENOUGH TO MAYBE GIVE YOU CANCER? WE WON’T KNOW ANYTIME SOON
So what does this mean in the long run? That’s not yet clear. The IARC ruling from earlier this month that made the finding only ascertains whether something is a potential hazard or not. It didn’t quantify just how much of the dastardly aspartame one has to consume for it to be dangerous. So the water is muddy, to say the least. And, well, there’s the food industry with all its lobbyists, elected political allies and whatnot. Because as much as Diet Coke is terrible (still my opinion), it’s got nothing on how long it took to recognize that cigarettes are…. also carcinogenic.
Just sayin.’
